Name: EDI "EeeDee", Enhanced Defense Intelligence.
Canon: Mass Effect
Original or Alternate Universe: Original (game choices will be listed in AU specifications).
Canon Point: End of Mass Effect 3.
Number: RNG!
Setting: space
History:
Developed from rogue AI, Reaper technology, Cerberus
Shackled AI
Unshackled!!
In "hiding"
Gets a body, becomes squad member
Saves the universe or something
Personality:
When we first encounter EDI in Mass Effect 2, it's as the Cerberus-built Normandy's AI computer. At this time she's still shackled - meaning her access to the ship's systems is limited, putting her as primarily a secondary/assistant function to the human pilot - but she still shows clear signs of a unique personality.
"I always work at optimal capacity."
"I enjoy the sight of humans on their knees. That is a joke."
"No matter how far we advance, we will remember the sacrifices of those who made it possible... And we will remember Shepard. Because of him... I am alive, and I am not alone."
"If I decide to overthrow the humans, you will be the first to know."
"It is interesting. The crew are approaching this platform to speak with me, even though they can do so anywhere on the ship. It's as if they wish to treat me as part of the crew. I am not, but this changes my perspective. I like it."
Had lots of personality even while shackled; personality was intact, but access to ship systems was limited; unshackling her didn't suddenly allow her to think/feel out of nowhere
Arguably "learned" a lot of human characteristics from Joker - sense of humor, etc
Playing pranks on Joker, overloading Cerberus with porn
Picks up characteristics as she goes - asks Shep for advice, but usually makes her own decisions or has her own opinions; has a very distinct personality and a very strong moral code
Remains quite morally steady regardless of player choices - EDI is sweet and sympathetic to others on the whole, even if Shep is a douche
Consistently sides with humans despite the fact that she's a synthetic, seems to have very little conflict over this choice (possibly because she gets good examples of humanity to deal with; even dick Shep is trying to save the world)
Doesn't serve blindly, not just a machine; she seeks to protect herself when the Normandy is given to the Alliance by pretending to be a simple AI, and when Cerberus attempts to reshackle her after Joker has let her run loose, she fights back (seems to grasp self-preservation, freedom, etc in addition to simply preferring to remain more efficient)
She follows orders, but ultimately she follows them based on trust - she bucks authority just fine when she's dealing with people who aren't Shep and Joker
She picks her loyalties: ends up helping Shep/Normandy evade the Illusive Man, though he technically should have been her boss to begin with
Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations:
Extremely smart! As an AI she can process buttloads of data instantaneously. As a human she'll find the processor to be very slow and limiting, though she'll still be clever and good at analyzing information once she adjusts - but only as much as any other human with a very high IQ. Being in a human body won't otherwise be a huge challenge for her, though she's used to being in an enhanced facsimile and will have to adjust to regular human sensory input and fragility.
Inventory: joker's hat
Appearance: smokin
Age: About 3 years (or more); first discovered on a moon in ME1, which takes place at least 2 years prior to ME2/3. No idea how long the VI was in development before that, but it probably wasn't quick.
